For her debut novel, Lola drew inspiration from her husband, Cedric Fisher.
“I have always loved reading books, particularly romantic mysteries, but never thought about writing one until I married a publisher.” Once Lola realized she could create her own story like the ones she loved reading so much, she did just that. Ten months later, Mystery in Brightcloud was born. Lola’s 32 years as an audit manager for the U.S. Air Force gave her the tools she needed to write the novel, in addition to personal experiences of absorbing books, movies, and TV shows throughout her life.
When asked what tip she would share with other emerging writers, Lola advised: “to just start writing if you have a story to tell.” Finding a good publisher is paramount, as well. “Don’t worry about not having any writing experience or being concerned about poor grammar, punctuation, etc. A good publisher will help them with that. It was a beautiful Monday morning. The sun was shining, and gorgeous white clouds filled the sky. While preparing to go to work, Savannah Stevens heard the doorbell ring. Who could that be this early in the morning? She quickly grabbed her robe, slipped into it, and ran to see who was at the door.
At the door stood two distinguished-looking gentlemen dressed in suits. One was tall, approximately six feet four inches, with broad shoulders. He was Black with smooth, dark brown skin, brown eyes, and a neatly trimmed mustache. The other gentleman was slightly shorter, approximately six feet tall. He was Caucasian with blue eyes, blonde hair, and a clean-shaven appearance. Not knowing what to expect or who these gentlemen were, Savannah was cautious and used her Ring security camera to speak with them rather than open the door.
“Yes, may I help you?” she said.
The taller gentleman said, “Are you, Ms. Savannah Stevens?”
Savannah responded, “Yes, I am.”
He pulled a gold badge from his pocket, held it up so she could see it clearly through the Ring camera, and said, “My name is Detective Brad Michaels, and this is Detective Joseph Kilson. We are with the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, and we are here to talk to you about a murder.”
